Public vs Private Dental School Cost: Where the Line Actually Falls

The rule of thumb is that public dental schools are cheap and private ones are expensive. The data says the rule is half right. In our model the median private seat costs $578,956 with in-school interest against $534,030 for the median public out-of-state seat: a premium of about $45k. But 6 of the 22 private schools come in below the public out-of-state median, and the most expensive public seats cost more than most private ones. What actually separates cheap from expensive is residency, not the sign on the building.
On the figures in this guide: dollar amounts from our cost model are estimates built from published cost-of-attendance data circa 2022, and unless a row says in-state they are out-of-state or private figures. Where we say “projected” we have grown the 2022 figure at 4% a year to 2026. The real divider: residency
Public schools charge two prices. Nearly every public row in our model is the out-of-state one, because that is what most applicants face. The single school modelled at both rates, Michigan, costs $394,218 in-state and $507,939 out-of-state: a $113,721 difference for the same seat in the same building. Private schools charge one price to everyone, which is why a private school can be the cheaper option for an out-of-state applicant and the expensive one for a resident.
So the right comparison for you is not public vs private. It is: your in-state public school(s), then the cheap out-of-state publics (Texas and Illinois lead), then the cheaper privates, then everything else. See in-state vs out-of-state.
Where private schools win
Three places. Institutional aid: wealthier private schools discount aggressively for the applicants they want, and a sticker price is not what a strong applicant pays. Class size and clinic volume, at some. And admissions: private schools are not bound to prefer residents, so for an applicant from a state with no dental school or a hyper-competitive public one, a private school can be the more realistic seat.

Many do, and the wealthier ones discount substantially for applicants they want to enrol. Merit aid tracks DAT and GPA, so a stronger score can make a private school cheaper than its sticker price.
